Injured bakery worker awarded £17,500 compensation after ladder fall
6 Jan 2010
A 28 year old bakery worker suffered serious injury and was unemployed for two years after a fall at work in April 2006, left him with a serious and painful back injury. British Bakeries admitted liability in the recent £17,500 settlement.
His accident occurred as he was on a ladder using a broom to clean some machinery in British Bakeries' Newcastle plant. The ladder slipped and the man fell to the floor.
Even after long courses of physiotherapy, the Newcastle man is still unable to do heavy lifting.
Subsequently British Bakeries closed its Newcastle site, where the injury occurred, and the victim was then made redundant. Because of his injury he was not able to get another job without working for considerably lower pay.
The worker contacted his trade union, the Bakers, Food & Allied Workers Union, which contacted a local personal injury law company to pursue a case for compensation against British Bakeries.
The PI lawyer argued that the vicim's workplace had been unsafe because employees had to climb a ladder with a broom and lean over a conveyor belt to clean the machinery.

“It is a great relief to have this compensation. I was unable to work in my usual job for two years because I was in so much pain. Now I am able to return to work I have had to apply for less skilled jobs where no heavy lifting was needed. As a result I’ve found it difficult to get back into employment,” said the accident victim.
